Altogether the focus and scheduling of the tasks is good. There are a few ambiguities in the exact division of work, with regard to social conflict (units 6 and 9) and structural change (units 3 and 9).

The great variety of the schools of thought covered implies a certain heterodoxy of methods. Method and techniques of unit 5 are unclear.

The human resources are fully adequate to carry out the research project.

Altogether the financial support requested is adequate. Although it seems to be relatively expensive for a book project, with regard to the importance of the topic and the breadth and depth of detailed knowledge required it is okay. I recommend a 15-20 percent reduction since phase I is not convincing and a few items (such as 4000 Euro for paper submissions and offprints in unit 1) are excessive.

Neri Salvadori is an internationally highly recognized mathematical economist with a strong Sraffian flavour. His recent research activities in the areas covered are strong and, together with his excellent organizational skill, justify his role as coordinator and principal investigator.

Altogether the team is well balanced. There is a good mix of very experienced older colleagues and promising younger associate professors. All units are competent and have an international orientation.

The proposed partnership is adequate. All units fit well into the program so that the research network has an increased competence and synergy effect.

Commento generale

Altogether this is a rather ambitious but a fine and competent project, dealing with the important literature on modern endogenous growth theory. In linking economic growth to income distribution it addresses a very relevant but also neglected topic, thereby exhaling a strong classical spirit. With regard to the earlier COFIN project, which put too much emphasis on the AK model as a kind of strawmen, the integration of Schumpeterian endogenous growth theory (unit 4) is a major progress. Further strengths are the integration of structural economic dynamics and the investigation of the role of effective demand. Despite the competent text of unit 8, the weight of monetary and financial issues in the whole project is understated. Researchers should look at the literature stimulated by Kuznets' 1955 paper 'Economic Growth and Income Inequality' (Kuznets curve).

It is a well-defined research project with a competent team in which every single research unit is well qualified. I recommend granting the project.
